The surface brightness and distance of Dwingeloo 1

چکیده
The Tully-Fisher distance to the galaxy Dwingeloo 1, recently discovered very close to the Galactic Plane, is highly uncertain because of the range of possible foreground extinction values which have been suggested. We show that very high values of A B (10 magnitudes) or low values (4 magnitudes) are unreasonable since the intrinsic surface brightness implied for Dwingeloo 1 would be unrealistically high or low for a mid type disc galaxy. Obtaining 'normal' surface brightness values requires A B close to 6 magnitudes. We therefore concur with distance estimates which suggest values 3 Mpc.

During the course of a search for compact, isolated gas clouds moving with anomalous velocities in or near our own Galaxy (Braun and Burton 1998), we have discovered, in the data of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey (Hartmann and Burton 1997) of Galactic hydrogen, the H i signature of a large galaxy, moving at a recession velocity of 282 km s −1 with respect to our Galaxy. Deep multicolor and spectro...

We present for the first time infrared observations of the nearby highly obscured galaxy Dwingeloo 1 (Dw1), including deep H-band imaging covering a total of 4.9 × 4.9, together with J and Ks imaging of the central 2.5 ′ × 2.5. We used the small dispersion of the intrinsic infrared colors of spiral galaxies to determine an infrared H-band extinction of AH = 0.47± 0.11mag towards Dw1. In using i...
متن کاملEvidence for a Non-Expanding Universe: Surface Brightness Data From HUDF
Surface brightness data can distinguish between a Friedman-Robertson-Walker expanding universe and a nonexpanding universe. For surface brightness measured in AB magnitudes per angular area, all FRW models, regardless of cosmological parameters, predict that surface brightness declines with redshift as (z+1), while any non-expanding model predicts that surface brightness is constant with distan...
متن کاملDeep VLBI Imaging of Faint Radio Sources in the NOAO Boötes Field
We have conducted a deep, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observation at 1.4 GHz of an area of sky located within the NOAO Boötes field, using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array and 100-m Green Bank Telescope. Applying wide-field VLBI techniques, a total of 61 sources, selected from a Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) image, were surveyed simultaneously with a range of differe...
متن کاملInfrared excess and molecular clouds : A comparison of new surveys of far - Infrared and H I 21 - cm emission at high latitudes
We have created a map of the large-scale infrared surface brightness in excess of that associated with the atomic interstellar medium, using region-by-region correlations between the far-infrared and 21-cm line surface brightness. Our study updates and extends a previous attempt with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite and Berkeley/Parkes H I surveys. The far-infrared observations used here are...
